Dinchack’s humble beginning…

Image 1

This was the longest break on this blog… apologies to the readers and followers! It was due to my total focus on “Dinchack” – the training company I formed in May.

Thanks to the support of family, friends, old colleagues and the super-helpful community of entrepreneurs in Hong Kong, the company seems to be slowly but surely getting off the ground. Please click on the image to read the full story.

And check back for life-enhancing blog posts here at least once a week. Check the Dinchack Facebook page here.

The first 8 weeks were Dinchack!

DSC_0072-2

1st May must have been a lucky date to start a new business – because Dinchack seems to be going places, literally! The first 8 weeks have been nothing short of, well, Dinchack!

  • Dinchack did six training events in Hong Kong, Manila, Nakhon Si Thammarat (South Thailand), Bangkok and Jakarta!
  • Dinchack is now associated with a few like-minded, well-established and successful organizations like Ariva in the Philippines, Kornerstone and General Assembly in HK!
  • Dinchack has started supporting Crossroads Foundation, with every paid event!
  • Dinchack is now a member of BNI International!
  • Dinchack has just hired two summer interns who will be trained in online marketing and admin!
  • Dinchack Facebook page crossed 3,000 fans!
  • Dinchack now shows up as the #1 result in Google search!

July is looking spectacular with four training events confirmed already, and a couple of more expected! On the personal front, I’ve organized myself to work 0700-1300 on planning, marketing, communications, follow-ups… meet clients 1400-1800, swim regularly in the open sea at sunrise or sunset, read related books and blogs daily… and still have plenty of time for the family.

As one of my recent FB status said, I’m incredibly blessed, extremely grateful, super excited and totally turbo charged!

“When I grow up I want to be happy, just like I am now.”

Wow, one of the best TED videos I’ve ever watched!

In this inspiring 11-minute video, mature-beyond-his-years teenager, Logan LaPlante, explains why he thinks youth should be taught to be happy and healthy, and how “hacking” his education to follow his dream is helping him do just that.

And with over 270,000 views on YouTube since his talk was published in February, I think he’s on the right path to inspiring other people to do the same.

A small contribution can change lives!

Screen Shot 2013-05-25 at 6.04.34 PM

I just received this very moving story from Crossroads Foundation, telling us how a small contribution can make such a huge difference to people’s lives.

Bhavani is a 42 year old fisherwoman who lives on the coast of southeast India. Her family was, for years, totally dependent on the sea for its livelihood. Bhavani’s husband Muthu sailed out to sea each morning at 4:00 and Bhavani sold his catch at the local market. It was a precarious existence, however, and, as the family grew and their needs increased, the fish became more and more scarce. The income from Bhavani’s daily market sales was not enough to meet their needs for food, medicine and school fees. They had no option but to take out loans from a local moneylender who, typical of their kind, charged impossible rates of interest whilst intimidating those who could not pay. Bhavani could not keep up with the wildly inflated demands and she was terrified of the repercussions. She felt her family sink further and further into desperation, seeing no way out.

By way of background, Bhavani’s tribespeople live in southern India on sloping hillsides, in valleys, on the periphery of forests, as well as by the sea. They are marginalised and many do not have an official identity, are unable to vote and are cut off from other basic rights. Like most of her people, Bhavani has no access to electricity, clean water or formal healthcare whilst tuberculosis, skin infections and alcohol-related illnesses frequently claim their lives. Discrimination or lack of formal identity documents prevent children from getting into school and many fathers, like their fathers before them, are trapped in modern-day slavery, working without proper pay in rice mills. Action for Happiness!

greatdream_full_400Just found this great website dedicated to our favorite topic, happiness. In their own words: Action for Happiness is a movement for positive social change. We’re bringing together people from all walks of life who want to play a part in creating a happier society for everyone.

Check it out for facts, tips, resources and action steps for creating happiness for yourself and those around you. This is one of the posters that you can download from the site.

“Western neuroscience has now confirmed what Eastern wisdom has known for a long time: happiness is a skill we can learn. Research shows that happiness, compassion and kindness are the products of skills that can be learned and enhanced through training, thanks to the neuroplasticity of our brains.”

An exciting first month of Dinchack (my new venture)!

Image 8

On 1st May at 0700, I had a small solo event: I went to the corner desk of my living room which was to become my home office, turned my computer on, declared myself an entrepreneur, and started making checklists and plans. I can’t believe it’s been a month already!

With the support and encouragement of family, friends and even strangers, Dinchack has come a long way. Most of the goals established for the first month were achieved, and then some:

  • Partnered with Ariva, a training company in the Philippines, and did the first event yesterday. The next one is scheduled for August!
  • Partnered with Kornerstone, a training company in Hong Kong, and started with a training session for their own in-house sales team. They are planning a launch of my sales training program for their corporate clients in July!
  • Launched the CSR program by starting to support Crossroads Foundation of Hong Kong!
  • Made lots of new contacts in Hong Kong; been averaging one presentation a day for the last two weeks; joined a few networks.
  • Dinchack website got into the top three search results on Google! Dinchack blog averages three new posts a week!
  • Dinchack FB page has over 2600 followers and reaches over 600,000 people a week, with tips and resources on happiness, motivation and success!
  • Dinchack uniform t-shirts have been extremely popular – possibly another business idea!

The plans for June are looking very exciting already, starting with a 3-day training for ETL at Minor in Thailand! Joining more business networks, hiring an intern, and most importantly, getting at least two more paid events, are just some of the challenges.

Three quotes that inspire me daily:

  1. “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.” -Vince Lombardi
  2. “If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way.” -Napoleon Hill
  3. “I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.” -Bill Cosby

And my prospecting line: “Do you know any companies with salespeople, looking to increase sales?”

PS. It seems getting fired from ETL could be one of the best things that happened to me!

A 29-year old woman climbed the Everest, twice in a week!

Climber

Another inspiring story of the power of dreams, commitment and perseverance! Excerpts from the article on CNN:

Many climbers dream of reaching the peak of the world’s highest mountain at least once in their lifetime. Chhurim Sherpa has done it twice – in one week.

“People have set different kinds of climbing records in Everest,” said Chhurim, sitting on her living room couch directly beneath a string of certificates hung on the wall – the Guinness plaque included. “But no one has climbed twice within a week. So I just climbed with the sole motive of making a world record.”

Chhurim made her initial ascent on May 12 and then, after a two-day rest on her return to base camp, reached the peak again on May 19, 2012. Since Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary broke barriers by stepping afoot the 8,848-meter peak in 1953, many benchmarks have been set. But for Chhurim, it was Pasang Lhamu Sherpa – the first Nepalese woman to climb Everest (she died during her descent) – who inspired the then fifth grader to sketch a future plan that most girls the same age couldn’t conceive of.

When she came to Kathmandu to visit her sister in 2010, Chhurim enrolled in a basic mountaineering training course run by the Nepal Mountaineering Association. She said it helped her get the “psychological, physical, and technical training” required to prepare for her the mission. For the next two years, Chhurim honed her skills in rock climbing and first aid and climbed the Yala Peak (5,520m) in Nepal’s Langtang region. Inspiration from Dookaz

IMG_2506I bumped into Dookaz website when looking for good quality t-shirt suppliers for Dinchack. That’s how I met the owner, Iris Chan, whose story is nothing short of inspirational, and something I must share…

Iris is a qualified nurse who always wanted do something bigger and better, something that helps the community. So she founded Dookaz a few years ago, with a promise to:

  • make changes to our environment by doing what is right
  • encourage and conduct fair trade, fair business, equality and justice
  • encourage and protect our environment
  • spread positive messages all round

IMG_2502That’s quite an undertaking for a t-shirt company. After the initial challenges of any new business, her work became known in Hong Kong. They were the first company to offer anyone to print their own design, logo or message on t-shirts, without any minimum quantities – as long as the message was positive. Iris started teaching under-priveleged children and adults to learn how to make t-shirts and make a living. Business expanded to printing bags and shoes and labelling services, but still ensuring that none of the material or process would cause any harm to the human body or the environment. Her team grew to over 20 designers and workers, all of them as passionate as her to do good.

Then few months ago, her machinery broke down. With no money for repairs, business depended on handmade stuff only, and soon started to decline. She lost the entire team one after the other, but continued working all by herself to serve her existing clients as best as she could. Then last week, she broke her arm. All her family and friends told her this is a sign that she should finally close down the business. But Iris said, ‘I still have one arm, and the other will be ok soon’. And there she is, making t-shirts all by herself, with just one arm, serving her clients with a smile, and making a difference!

Iris is likely to read this piece, so please feel free to share your comments with her.

10 of the shortest and the most inspiring Buddha quotes

IMG_2444

Today is a celebration of Buddha’s birthday in Hong Kong. And here’s a collection of the shortest but very inspiring quotes by Buddha. Each one seems so simple, yet is so deep.

  1. You have no cause for anything but gratitude and joy.
  2. What you are is what you have been. What you’ll be is what you do now.
  3. Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love; this is the eternal rule.
  4. Until he has unconditional and unbiased love for all beings, man will not find peace.
  5. We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think.
  6. Every human being is the author of his own health or disease.
  7. Always be mindful of the kindness and not the faults of others.
  8. It is a man’s own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways.
  9. Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.
  10. Live every act fully, as if it were your last.

Do you have a favorite Buddha quote, or any other short inspiring quote to share?

Book Recommendation: Manuscript Found in Accra

IMG_2337I just finished reading this wonderful book by Paulo Coelho, and recommend to anyone looking for inspiration. Some excerpts:

“Losing a battle or losing everything we thought we possessed will bring us moments of sadness. But when those moments pass, we will discover the hidden strength that exists in each of us, a strength that will surprise us and increase our self-respect. We will look around and say to ourselves: ‘I survived.’ And we will be cheered by our words. Only those who fail to recognise that inner strength will say: ‘I lost’, and be sad.”

“Defeat ends when we launch into another battle. Failure has no end; it is a lifetime choice.”

“Stay close to those who sing, tell stories, and enjoy life, and whose eyes sparkle with happiness. Because happiness is contagious and will always manage to find a solution, whereas logic can find only an explanation for the mistake made.”

“Anxiety was born in the very same moment as mankind. And since we will never be able to master it, we will have to learn to live with it – just as we have learned to live with storms. For those who cannot learn to do so, life will be a nightmare.”

What’s your favorite Paulo Coelho’s book? Or any inspiration book. Please share through comments.

An exciting first week of Dinchack!

Image 4Dinchack completed its first week today. Few modest achievements:

  1. Dinchack website shows up in the top three search results on Google! Very exciting indeed, considering so many other dinchacks out there.
  2. Dinchack website has been viewed 1,937 times during the week. That’s fantastic, without any online marketing.
  3. Dinchack Facebook page now has 2,389 fans, in less than three weeks since launch! Overwhelming.
  4. And here’s what I am most thrilled about… Dinchack got it’s first client!

I have my first speaking assignment at the ’4th Annual Summit for Leaders and Managers’ on 31st May in Manila, organized by ‘Ariva! Events Management’. Hoping to get at least one more in May.

I am happy with the progress, and looking forward to a dinchack future ahead. Thanks to everyone’s encouragement, support and good wishes!

Happy May Day: I start as an entrepreneur today!

Image 9

First, a confession: I am very scared, though I keep telling myself ‘failure is an option, but fear is not’.

When I lost my job, I had two choices. On one hand, there were bills and mortgage, and the need to quickly start earning a stable income. I had been used to the comforts and securities of a ‘job’ for 27 years, so looking for another job seemed like the obvious choice.

But on the other hand, there was a dream and an option to finally pursue it. An opportunity to use my training skills to make a difference in many more lives, outside of one company. And to increase my income to match my dreams.

I chose risk, insecurity and uncertainty. I launched my training company, Dinchack. And today is officially the first day of operation. I started working at 0600 this morning, and I am very tempted to take the rest of the day off 🙂

What a great day to start a new venture. 1st May symbolizes a change of season in most countries – either the start of spring or of summer, depending on where you are. For me, it’s the beginning of the much awaited new chapter in my life!

1st May is also known as Labor Day, May Day or International Workers’ Day that’s celebrated in more than 80 countries. What better way to celebrate workers’ day than to start working for yourself!

11 benefits of napping during the day

A wonderful illustration from Daily Infographic shows, humans consolidate sleeping time for a long period at night, but we’re designed to feel tired in the early morning hours and mid-afternoon, when a 2 p.m. nap would feel awesome. A 2- to 5-minute nap can perk you up and a 5- to 20-minute nap can improve your motor skills and performance.

Looks like life could become really ‘dinchack’ if we napped every day!

4 fattening foods in Indo-Pak diets

ImageThis post was inspired by the Pakistan Club’s Annual Fair I attended last week. The purpose of the fair is to introduce Pakistani culture – food, handicrafts and other merchandise – to the local community and raise funds for the club. That it does very well! The food stalls selling the most popular Pakistani foods were a reminder of the four most common evils of the Indo-Pak diet, what I’m calling the four fattening “Chs”:

  1. Chawal (pronounced as Chaa-wul, meaning rice):  Most lunches and dinners are incomplete without rice, making it possibly the #1 cause of weight gain. What’s more, most of the rice consumed is white rice; mostly cooked in rice cookers thus leaving all the starch in. What’s worse is the biryani (fried rice) that is the preferred form of rice at all special occasions.
  2. Chapati (Che-paa-tee, meaning bread): Flat breads consumed over breakfast, lunch and dinner come in many forms. The only good one is the pan-baked bread made of brown wheat flour (roti). However, most of them are made of processed white flour (naan), and many are then pan-fried (paratha) or deep-fried (puri) making them even more fattening.
  3. Chicknai (chick-nai, meaning fat): Breakfast is fried eggs, with fried breads. Lunch and dinner are curries cooked in oil and often with fried rice. Plus the popular fried snacks in between – samosa, puri, fried rolls – making the diet extremely unhealthy and fattening.
  4. Chini (chee-nee, meaning sugar): Sugar is also a big part of the Indo-Pak diet. It’s common to take two teaspoons of sugar in tea and three in coffee, and have 2-4 cups a day. Carbonated drinks with lunch, dinner and snacks seem to have become more common, particularly with the younger generation. Then there’s the mithai (desserts) that’s often considered an essential part of any party. The popular deep fried jalebi and gulab jaman are probably the mothers of all evils that combine white carbs, sugar and oil.

Nobody needs scientific evidence that the above are unhealthy; we know that already. The question is how can we change something that’s such an integral part of our lifestyle? One possible answer is: one step at a time. Get rid of one Ch at a time. Think of making tiny, small, easy, simple changes, one at a time e.g.

  • Replace white rice/bread with brown rice/bread or boiled rice. Limit rice/bread to just one of the meals. Reduce the portion of rice/bread.
  • Use healthy oils like Olive or Canola if you must fry stuff. Avoid deep-fried stuff.
  • Try dried fruits, nuts and fruits as snacks.
  • Switch to brown sugar. Reduce sugar in your tea/coffee if you can’t completely remove it. Avoid carbonated drinks.
  • Add some fruits to breakfast, some soup and salad to lunch, some baked or grilled fish to dinner.

And what about all the temptations? Make Sunday your Sin-day, and eat whatever you like, as much as you like. Since you are going to cheat anyway, it’s better to have a cheat day that you look forward to. The idea of quitting something just for the next six days is also a lot easier than quitting something forever. Then it’s only five days, then four, three, two and one. Bingo, you did it!

Luckily, the fair was on a Sin-day. So I was able to enjoy some of the chs without feeling too guilty.

10 tips to stay happy and motivated after getting fired…

DSC05669

“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” -Dr. Seuss

I wrote this within two days of getting fired from my job, but decided to hold it till I’ve completed a couple of weeks. That gave me an opportunity to ensure that I applied all the Do’s and avoided all the Don’ts myself . These tips have not only allowed me to stay happy and motivated, but also focused on the new possibilities and making the right choices for the next phase of my life:

  1. Don’t deny it. If you aren’t normally prepared for the realities and changes in life, your first thoughts could be ‘I can’t believe it’, ‘It can’t be happening to me’. It’s OK, as long as you don’t remain in the state of denial for days or weeks. Remind yourself that thousands of people lose their jobs daily; it’s beyond your control. The quicker you accept the reality, the faster you can move on with your life.
  2. Don’t make it personal. Most sudden layoffs are results of corporate decisions, often part of cost-cutting exercises. Don’t make it personal with your boss or the HR manager. The world is too small to make enemies, and life is too short to hold grudges. And what if it is personal? Your best option is still to forgive, forget and move on.
  3. Don’t beat yourself. Unless you were terminated due to poor performance or misconduct, there’s no point in beating yourself and self-pity. Remind yourself of your skills and strengths that made you successful in this job, and will make you successful in your next venture.
  4. Don’t get angry. Getting angry with your family, friends, cat, the taxi guy or anyone else is not going to change anything, except adding to the negative emotions. Remind yourself ‘when things seem to be falling apart, sometimes they are actually falling into place.’ So keep your cool.
  5. Don’t give up your health regimen. Losing a job is no excuse to binge on unhealthy stuff or give up the exercise. That will only make your feel worse, while increased physical activity will boost your motivation. Continue reading

An exciting first week – after losing my job!

IMG_2218

The only reason I posted the news last Friday, within hours of getting fired from my job, was because it was the fastest and most efficient way of letting everyone in my world know what had happened and that I was actually excited about the situation. I never expected to receive 200+ beautiful messages through comments on the blog, Facebook, emails, SMS, whatsapp and phone calls! I can’t express in words how thrilled, excited, blessed and grateful I felt reading those messages. I smiled, laughed and cried. It would be a huge understatement to say that ‘you made my day/week’. You made my life! Thank you.

To those who keep saying ‘is that true?’ ‘how did it happen?’ ‘but why?’ ‘i still can’t believe’ etc., I can only say, ‘get over it, move on’!

To those who think they have lost a leader, mentor, guru, hero (and all those amazing words I didn’t think I was worthy of), I am very much alive and will continue doing what I do best. Feel free to connect with me through this blog, Facebook, or Twitter. I will also continue to post my photos and videos on Flickr and YouTube.

So what am I up to?

  • I have freelance work from the company till the end of April, to complete the ongoing projects and fulfill my travel commitments to the distributors. That means I get to see some of you soon!
  • I am working on my first CV ever, while also developing certain business plans. Absolutely over the moon about the possibilities!
  • I am doing more reading, more writing and more thinking! I’m still following the diet, and have more time for exercise too.
  • We have leased a much cheaper apartment at one of the edges of Hong Kong, and shifting in a few weeks. It’s much farther from the city but a bit bigger and right on top of a beautiful beach!
  • The family is totally supportive and positive, and we have never been closer!

Thanks again for your wonderful support and encouragement!
